New Delhi [India], January 28 (ANI): Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was granted 30-day parole on Tuesday.
Speaking to ANI, Ram Rahim’s Advocate Jitendra Khurana said that Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh parole is his legal right, and therefore should not be linked to politics.
“The 30-day parole has been granted to him today as per the law. Every prisoner has the legal right to apply for parole. This should not be connected to any political events or elections. While applying for parole, a prisoner can specify where they wish to go. This time, he applied to visit the Dera Sacha Sauda ashram, and he was granted permission accordingly. After being released on parole, he reached the ashram in Sirsa in the morning hours,” he said.
He further clarified, “As per law, parole can be granted for up to 70 days, and furlough for 21 days in a year. Ram Rahim’s parole is entirely within the legal framework.”
Earlier on January 3, the Supreme Court issued notice to the self-styled Godman and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others on a plea of CBI challenging the judgment of the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitting them in the 2002 murder of sect’s former manager Ranjit Singh.
A bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna and Sanjay Kumar sought a response from Ram Rahim and others and tagged the matter with another pending appeal filed by the complainant who had also challenged the acquittal.
The bench posted the matter for hearing before a bench headed by Justice Bela Trivedi which had issued a notice in the appeal filed by the complainant- the father of the deceased.
“Our attention has been drawn to the office report dated September 9, 2024, of the order passed by the bench of Justice Bela Trivedi, issue notice and tag with… the SLP be listed before the bench presided by Justice Bela Trivedi,” the bench ordered.(ANI)
